What is Reiki?

Reiki is a Japanese symbol that means "universal life energy".

This universal life force that is around us, is a natural energy that promotes healing and well being.

History

Reiki is a system of natural healing that was discovered in Japan in the early part of the 1900's by Dr. Mikao Usui. A Professor of Theology, Dr Usui studied the ancient Buddhist teachings and after many years of research and practise he developed the healing techniques of Reiki. It became known to the West in the 1970s, but today it is used in hospitals, clinics, hospices, health centres and in private homes.

Reiki is taught by Masters who are trained in the tradition passed from master to student. Anyone can receive or learn to give a Reiki treatment; the only prerequisite is the desire to be healed.

Treatment

Receiving a Reiki treatment from a practitioner is very simple. The recipient, fully dressed, simply relaxes on a couch or is seated in a chair. The healing energy gently passes through the practitioner's hands that are placed non-intrusively in a sequence of positions that cover the whole body. The treatment works in a holistic way promoting balance, well being, and harmony in the body, the mind and spirit. A treatment usually takes between 45 - 60 minutes.

Acute injuries can be helped very quickly while chronic illnesses take longer.

Reiki healing can be given anywhere at any time. The practitioner is a channel through which the energy is drawn by the need or imbalance in the recipient. Reiki flows to the areas of need, soothing pain and supporting the body's ability to heal itself.

Reiki can also be used simply for relaxation and de-stressing. Similarly, if you are lacking in energy or motivation, Reiki is a wonderful re-energiser.
